DIY: Sewing Table Makeover

I was the lucky girl to stumble upon my sewing machine and table a couple of years ago in a flea market (1960s Viking Husqvarna and a super cool old sewing table that folds out to give you more room), and I was even luckier that my mom bought it for me for Christmas and had the sewing machine repaired. It’s been a great machine, and I’ve sewed some fun projects on it!

But the table needed a little love, for sure. While it’s very sturdy and well-made (they just don’t make furniture like they used to, am I right?), there was a pretty big water stain on the top of the desk. I’d been brainstorming different ideas for how I wanted to fix up the table, and I originally thought I might paint the drawers a fun color or pattern. But the table is so classic, so pretty and old and well-made, I ultimately decided to stain the top of the desk (where the damage was concentrated) and keep the rest of the piece in its original state.

With the help of my dad, I sanded down the top of the table with a sander. Pretty sure I found my true calling, sanding with that machine was so fun! I wish I had a picture of me sanding the table, with the work glasses and gloves on! But you’ll just have to imagine it. Lucky for me, only the top of the table was damaged, so I didn’t have to sand down any of the rest of the table.

Next, I applied a few coats of a stain that I thought was going to be pretty close to the original stain color and a top coat. You guys, the stain color is the exact same as the original. Ok, I’m sure it’s not exactly the same, but you couldn’t tell the difference if you looked at it with a magnifying glass. It looks amazing!

I didn’t want to ruin the classic 60s vibe of the table, but I did want to have a little fun and a little happy pop of color somehow, so I picked out some pretty blue floral contact paper at the store and applied it to the inside of the drawers! It’s a subtle statement that I think is really fun, and nobody except me will ever see it, but I love seeing the happy print every time I open the drawers.

I’ve been dreaming of finishing this project for a while, and it felt so good to tackle it and have it turn out really great. It just feels nice to check stuff off your to-do list, you know?

23 Before 24

I’m having a little freak-out moment over here. Tomorrow is my birthday, and I’m turning 24, and this year just feels like it’s gone so fast and 24 just sounds like such a serious age…I know, I sound kind of silly. But I think (hope?) it’s normal to have some little anxieties around birthdays…mixed emotions, really, because nobody loves a good birthday week celebration like me. I’m basically the queen of birthday week. And yet I’m still a little nervous about the big two-four.

Anyway, all freak-outs aside, I’m doing a little reflecting on the past year of my life and I thought it would be fun to think of 23 things I’ve done as a 23 year-old before I turn 24 tomorrow. So on this magnificent birthday-eve, here’s 23 Before 24:

  1. I lived in 4 states while I was 23 – Colorado, Pittsburgh, Florida, & North Carolina
  2. I finished graduate school
  3. I started eating burgers again
  4. I saw 200 manatee (all at the same time) and it was amazing
  5. I went back to ballet after a 3 year hiatus
  6. I started getting serious about eating right and exercising again (just in the last 2 weeks)
  7. I worked really hard on expanding my blog in a purposeful way
  8. I started preparing for the biggest exam of my whole life — NBCOT here I come
  9. I ate no real ice cream (lots of lactaid ice cream though)
  10. One of my best friends got married and I was there in spirit! I’m still drooling over her gorgeous photos.
  11. I’ve been in 15 states – Pittsburgh, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Kansas
  12. I’ve been working on breaking the bad habit of biting my nails
  13. I went to a dueling piano bar because apparently that’s a thing now
  14. I ate fried green tomatoes for the first time ever (SO GOOD)
  15. I relied on a laundromat for 3 months. It wasn’t great, I wouldn’t recommend it
  16. I dyed my hair for the first time in my life (just highlights, but a big deal for me!)
  17. I made a list of trips I’d like to take next *hint: it’s a looong list*
  18. I lived without a kitchen for 3 months
  19. I confirmed that the career path I thought was for me, actually is for me. Yay!
  20. I found an amazing photo-editing app that I will probably be loyal to forever
  21. I started wearing my hair more natural instead of blow-drying it every day
  22. I was happy 95% of the time (a big portion of that sad 5% went to school stress)
  23. I realized I wanted to move back to Colorado for good

Life Update: Summer Sun

Now that I’m back home, life is good. I’m settling into studying for my NBCOT exam, spending time with my pets, and helping my family keep up with the chores. I’ve been keeping pretty busy, and I’m really enjoying the summer (my favorite season). Last weekend was so good, you guys, my family took lots of long walks, set off some little fireworks to celebrate the fourth, and cooked a really nice meal. And this week is “birthday week” for me, and I’m getting kind of nervous about turning 24…that just sounds like a real serious age. Anyway, here are some photos from the last couple weeks around here. Hope you and your family had a wonderful 4th of July!
