Family Weekend in Santa Cruz

Are you guys busy getting ready for Halloween this weekend? I feel like it really snuck up on me this year, I’m just spending the night with my roommates and friends for some board games in costumes (we’re all dressing up as different Rick’s and Morty’s from “Rick and Morty”). I didn’t go to any Halloween parties this year, because my parents flew out from Colorado to visit.

We drove down to Santa Cruz, CA and spent a fun and relaxing 3-day weekend in the surf and sand. I think we got really lucky with the weather, because it was in the upper 60’s and 70’s with sun while we were there. We spent our time eating good food, walking around a few towns, and sitting in the sand. It was the best! Here are some pictures from our weekend:

We stayed in an Airbnb about a mile from Capitola Village, which is one of my favorite Santa Cruz beaches. There’s always a lot to do and see in the village; you can walk along the beach, watch the surfers ride the waves, stroll around the town, and grab a bite to eat. The crowd seems to be very family friendly, too, so it’d be a good place to take kiddos.

My favorite little beach-side shop to eat is Beach Break by Mariannes in Capitola – they have amazing fries. I got the fried chicken sandwich with sriracha-mayo, but the burgers are great, too. I always take pictures of my food, my parents think I’m ridiculous. But how else will I remember the great meals? Duh.

My parents are seriously the best. I’m so grateful that we have such a close family and good relationship, I know a lot of people don’t have that with their families. Anyway. I’m just glad to have them in my life.

The first day, we drove down to Pajaro Dunes area, exploring. The beach ended up being too cold and windy that day, but we stopped at a farm stand and picked up these INCREDIBLE berries. I am not kidding, these strawberries were the BEST I’ve ever had. I’m not sure I can even eat a normal strawberry again. Kidding, but they really were that good.

On our second morning, we walked around the Santa Cruz beach harbor in the fog. The guy who took this picture at the lighthouse for us said “do something exciting,” and apparently I thought that meant sticking my arm out. Haha.

We loved spending time at Main Beach and the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz. My favorite part is the wharf, because they have all these little cut-outs where you can peek down under the pier and see sea lions! We must have seen 100’s of them over the weekend. We kept going back for more, haha. My family really loves animals. Sea lions are so fun to watch, they keep climbing on top of each other to get the best napping spot.

We grabbed street tacos at a little dive just up the street from the wharf. You just can’t go to the beach without getting tacos, am I right? The shredded chicken taco was SO GOOD, you guys. I wish I remembered what the little restaurant was called…I do remember it was green! Anybody know?

Anyway, I loved spending the weekend at the beach with my parents. I’m so glad they were able to fly out and visit me, especially because it’s pretty rare I get to see them these days! Such a good time.

Life Lately: October Vibes

Is it just me or was it just August, like, last week? Somehow we’re already almost through all of October, and it hasn’t quite felt like fall to me yet. Maybe it’s because I’m used to the Colorado fall, and here in California it’s still been pretty warm. Seriously, this week is in the high 80s and low 90s! There’s barely any color changes in the leaves, too, which is kind of weird. But, one way or another, it’s almost November. Wanted to share a few quick photos with a brief update, since it’s been such a busy fall.

Life Lately // Imperfect Chevron

A couple of weekends ago, I hiked Mission Peak (a classic Fremont hike) with a friend. It was 85 degrees in the middle of the afternoon and we didn’t bring enough water, and I honestly thought I wasn’t going to make it. My friend pushed me to the top, and even though I probably won’t do that hike again anytime soon, I’m glad we made it. This picture is the view from the top. (Also pretty amazed my friend put up with my complaining, thanks for dealing with me at my worst.)

Life Lately // Imperfect Chevron

After trying sushi for the first time this month (and loving it, surprisingly!), I picked up this adorable printed blouse as an homage to my new love for it. All them sushi vibes!

Life Lately // Imperfect Chevron

Made homemade hot-pot last weekend, and it was SO good. Still tampering with the broth recipe, but it’ll get there. If you haven’t had hot-pot before, it’s a broth that you cook meat and vegetables in at your table (kind of like Asian fondue, I guess?).

Life Lately // Imperfect Chevron

My poor kitty (who lives in Colorado with my parents) had to have a cyst removed above her eye this week, and she looked so scary after! Poor little girl. I guess the timing is all right, with Halloween right around the corner. She can go as a zombie cat, maybe?

Life Lately // Imperfect Chevron

Picked up this little Cabin candle and have really enjoyed burning it so far. It’s subtle but freshens up the room with a musky, earthy scent.

And a snapchat from the Pumpkin patch, because what would Halloween be without pumpkins? Side note, I carved mine WAY too early and it’s already mushy. So. Womp womp. But it was still fun, definitely one of my favorite fall traditions. My family always carved pumpkins every year, and I love continuing to do so to celebrate the season.

Anyway, hope things are going well for all of you! Happy Halloween (:

Little Beauty Gifts

*This post is not sponsored. All opinions are my own.*

I love giving gifts. It’s kind of like a sport to me, and I’m thinking about gifts for specific people all year round. I just get so excited to give the recipient the special thing that I picked out for them! As a kid, I remember accidentally blurting out the surprise to my dad on at least 2 occasions. And I still actually have to be really careful not to accidentally tell the person what I got them, even as a 25 year old. I almost always ruin it somehow, just from pure excitement.

As much as I love giving gifts, I do find that some people are challenging to come up with good ideas for. I find myself searching for the perfect gift, and often feeling like I’m coming up short. Today, I’m sharing a quick round-up of little beauty/makeup gifts that would make great gifts for friends, coworkers, or family members that love beauty products!

Little Beauty Gifts // ImperfectChevron

CANMAKE Cream Cheek Blush in Coral Orange: I love this adorable cream blush. It’s made in Japan and I had to wait about a month to get it after ordering (totally worth it, by the way!). But this stuff is amazing. It gives my cheeks that dewy fresh pop of blush, and lasts several hours before fading. Plus, it comes in the most adorable little compact, and is little enough you could stash it in your purse for later.

Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist with Rosemary – a finishing spray that sets your makeup with SPF 50? Sign me up. This little beauty product is great for your golden goddesses that are happiest in the sun, but don’t want to expose their skin to UV rays. Plus, the scent is refreshing. And you can just toss it in your bag or purse for the day and head out the door!

Little Beauty Gifts // ImperfectChevron

The Beauty Crop – Fabulous Flocking Lashes Waterproof Mascara: most waterproof mascara that I’ve ever come into contact with hasn’t been all that waterproof, but this product really works well for me! I’ve swam in the ocean (and had a total Moana moment, when she tips the boat over and gets slammed by waves over and over) and this mascara stayed put all day. Plus, it’s really easy to remove with eye makeup remover at the end of the day so I don’t have to scrub my eyes so hard. And it’s a pink tube with flamingo print!

Little Beauty Gifts // ImperfectChevron

Pacifica Solid Perfume – this little solid perfume is small enough to throw in your bag without worrying about it getting crushed or weighing you down. They’ve got lots of pretty scents (I have the Tahitian Gardenia scent), none of which are overbearing or strong. Plus, the packaging is simple but cute, which is honestly important when it comes to makeup. I think it’d make a great gift for anyone (pre-teens, teens, or adults).

Little Beauty Gifts // ImperfectChevron

NYX Born To Glow – Liquid Illuminator: it’s no secret I love this liquid illuminator, I’ve been using it for a couple years to give my skin that natural glow you get after a yoga class. I use the Sunbeam color because it gives my fair skin a nice glow. It lasts forever, too!             Little Beauty Gifts // ImperfectChevron

Almay Pen Eyeliner in Navy: blue eyeliner has been a big trend in beauty this year, and I can see why. Navy blue adds a subtle pop of color without seeming too overdone or exaggerated. Who wouldn’t appreciate a fun eyeliner for those days when you need something to wake you up and get you going? *Ahem, Mondays*

Little Beauty Gifts // ImperfectChevron

Just a few special things to treat all the amazing people in your life! I’d honestly love to receive any of these fun little beauty products, and I think most of my friends would, too. Happy gifting!

Fall Fashion Inspiration

As sad as I am to be saying “goodbye” to summer, I always look forward to fall. The crispy air, the changing leaves, and of course, the fashion. Is it just me, or is it way easier to put together the perfect looks in the fall? I think it has something to do with layering.

Anyway, I’ve been trying to curate a “quality over quantity” closet this year by cleaning out my closet and only purchasing quality pieces that fit into a collection of clothes that all work together. And I’ve definitely got a few target pieces I’m looking to add to my collection this fall. Here are some fashion pieces that are inspiring me as we swing into Fall (click photos for links):

1. Structured Tops

I’ve been seeing (and LOVING) all the structured tops this year. Bell sleeves, peplum, give it all to me! So into it. These tops are versatile and can be dressed up or down. Fall Fashion Inspiration // Imperfect Chevron

2. Statement Jackets

I’ve always been a fan of statement jackets. I think that you can take a blah basic outfit and transform it into something really special with one really unique piece. Yes, they may not match everything you own, but a statement overcoat can change your whole look and upgrade your layering game.

3. Slide-on Sneakers

These have been around for a while, and I finally just found a light sand colored pair that I’m officially in love with. They’re comfortable and look amazing with jeans, especially skinny or boyfriend style jeans.

4. Barely There

Supermodels like Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, and Kendall Jenner have been all over this style for a while, but I am officially on board with the “lingerie” style camis. They’re comfortable and breezy, and are honestly an effortless way to look well-dressed. I do caution, though, the best way to style these while remaining professional is to make sure not too much actual lingerie is showing underneath. A little peek of lace is subtle and sexy, but you don’t want to show the whole bra.

5. Short Skirt / Long Jacket

I’ve always loved the look of long-sleeve tops with shorts or mini-skirts, and I love this cozy version with a pink suede skirt. I actually purchased a pink suede skirt last spring and haven’t had the right chance to wear it out yet, but this picture made me want to wear it ASAP. Love the balance of a chunky knit with a soft mini.

So that’s all I’ve got for now! I’m sure in another month or so I’ll be ready to share some more pieces I’m dreaming of. Now that we’re all in the fall spirit, who else is ready for Halloween?! *raises hand*

A Day in Santa Cruz, CA!

A lot has happened this summer, so lets play a quick round of catch-up before I share some fun photos from a recent day in Santa Cruz.

I visited home (Colorado) over July 4th weekend, and it was SO GOOD, you guys. Spent so much time with my parents and brother, and my grandma. I even got to see my cousins! I love my family so much, and it was such a nice little trip. My cat kind of ignored me the whole time, but you know how cats are.

I turned 25 (omg, how!?) and spent my birthday moving into a new room. I’m settling in, loving my new room and my new housemates. This year is going to be a good one, I can tell.

I started a new workout routine…I’m waking up at 5am to go to the gym 3 mornings a week now. It’s…new. I don’t enjoy getting up that early, but once I’m at the gym, it doesn’t seem that bad. And I’m finding I feel a little more energized on those mornings! So we’ll see how long it lasts. I’m trying!

Aaaaannnd…that’s pretty much it. Oh, I’ve had a disappointing turn of events — I think I mentioned I was planning a trip to Paris, France, with my family for the fall. I am not able to go on the trip, so been feeling a little bummed about that…but I’m trying to stay positive and putting my efforts into thinking about a spring destination. Any suggestions? I’m thinking somewhere in Spain or the Mediterranean region?

And now, some photos from Santa Cruz! When my dad was in town helping me move to my new place, we went to Santa Cruz for a day of relaxation at the beach. The morning was really foggy, but we stopped at the Harbor for a couple hours to walk and look at the boats, and it gave me all the feels. We even saw some dolphins off shore!

And this little dingy was called “The Eloise” so of course I had to take a picture, since my cat is named Elouise (and yes, I know it’s spelled incorrectly).

We drove up to Capitola village and hung out on the beach for a few hours. We grabbed these delicious burgers at the ice cream shop right off the beach (SO GOOD), saw a seal in the shallows, and walked on the pier.

We love you, Santa Cruz! Looking forwards to spending more time at the beach soon.

Hope you’re all having a great summer!

Why I Started Getting Highlights

Today’s post is something I’ve been wanting to write for a little while, and while it may sound silly, it’s about a subject that’s been pretty sensitive and difficult for me to approach. I have a confession to make: I started getting highlights in my hair! *crowd gasps*

Ok, I know that sounds over-dramatic. I mean, who doesn’t color their hair anymore, right? But this is actually a pretty big step for me. I was always really blonde as a kiddo, and because I was a lifeguard at an outdoor pool in the summers, I kept my locks crazy blonde naturally all through undergrad. Observe:

Hair Refresh // Imperfect Chevron

And you guys, having that naturally blonde hair was kind of a source of pride for me. I’d get compliments, people would say “you have the prettiest hair color!” and I could casually reply “thank you, it’s just my natural color.” I had this dumb sense of pride that my hair had never been touched by highlights or hair dye for the longest time.

But once I stopped lifeguarding and started grad school (read: spending all of my free time indoors studying), my hair started to darken. Don’t get me wrong, it still had some blonde hues. But it was more of a dirty blond, and I started to get really bummed out about it. I’ve always seen myself as a blonde, as silly as it sounds, that’s always been a part of my identity. I started to not feel so much like myself, and have some self-deprecating thoughts.

I finally decided to do something about it this year! I wanted to go back to blonde, back to the color I was used to seeing on myself. I considered dying my hair, but decided against it because of the maintenance it requires (I didn’t want to have to go get my roots dyed every couple months because I’m lazy). So I went for highlights, to add some light and bright blended color. And I love it, you guys!

Here’s the “before:”

And here’s the “after:”

My stylist recommended a full highlight instead of a partial, so the color would go all the way to the nape of my neck and work to lighten all of my hair, creating a blended and natural look (rather than the stripey tiger look I was so hoping to avoid). I’m so happy with the resulting color.

In the end, I just realized that I wasn’t happy with my natural color anymore, so I decided to make a change. I’m so glad I took the plunge.

A Visit from my Parents

Hey, internet world! Happy May, how the heck did we get here already?

As you may have seen, I’ve been taking a break from blogging (and many of my typical hobbies, actually) because I’ve been needing to focus on work and my work/life balance…which is continuing. It’s a work in process. Happily, I seem to be getting a little better at balancing the work part and taking some breaks, which is helpful.

In the meantime, I wanted to share some photos from when my parents visited me last week. They flew in from Colorado last Wednesday, and of course I managed to get really *really* sick on Wednesday (I could barely swallow water because my throat was so sore and swollen). So I ended up spending Thursday and Friday in bed sleeping while my parents entertained themselves. Just my luck, am I right? Luckily I felt well enough on Saturday to take a drive with them up to the North Bay area.

We tried to drive to Muir Woods, an idea I now realize was insane on a summery Saturday. It took a crazy long time to drive up there with the traffic, and there wasn’t even any parking when we arrived. Yikes, Bay Area. That’s the one thing I’m not loving about you, the crowds and the traffic. It seems hard to get away from all of that hustle-bustle business. Anyway, we managed to get a parking spot at Muir Beach and ended up just admiring the ocean for a while before lunch. The ocean is definitely my happy place, I think I could live next to it and never tire of it.

After that, we drove to Sausalito and enjoyed a brief walk around the town and looked at all the cool boats. That town was also pretty hustle-bustle on the day we were there, but it seemed like a fun place. Definitely more boutiques and fancy little cafes and bistros than dives and hole-in-the-wall places, but it was pretty to drive up that huge hill through the neighborhood and get to see such an amazing view!

On our way back to the East Bay, we drove over the Golden Gate bridge, which was really worth it. It was beautiful! I’d actually like to walk or bike over the bridge this summer, but we’ll see if I get to it this year. San Francisco is really the coolest city, I wish I lived a little closer to it!

It was so nice to see my parents, and get to spend a little time with them last week. I’m still really happy about my decision to move to California, but I do miss my family and Colorado. Hoping to see my parents again soon!
