Fall Fashion Inspiration

As sad as I am to be saying “goodbye” to summer, I always look forward to fall. The crispy air, the changing leaves, and of course, the fashion. Is it just me, or is it way easier to put together the perfect looks in the fall? I think it has something to do with layering.

Anyway, I’ve been trying to curate a “quality over quantity” closet this year by cleaning out my closet and only purchasing quality pieces that fit into a collection of clothes that all work together. And I’ve definitely got a few target pieces I’m looking to add to my collection this fall. Here are some fashion pieces that are inspiring me as we swing into Fall (click photos for links):

1. Structured Tops

I’ve been seeing (and LOVING) all the structured tops this year. Bell sleeves, peplum, give it all to me! So into it. These tops are versatile and can be dressed up or down. Fall Fashion Inspiration // Imperfect Chevron

2. Statement Jackets

I’ve always been a fan of statement jackets. I think that you can take a blah basic outfit and transform it into something really special with one really unique piece. Yes, they may not match everything you own, but a statement overcoat can change your whole look and upgrade your layering game.

3. Slide-on Sneakers

These have been around for a while, and I finally just found a light sand colored pair that I’m officially in love with. They’re comfortable and look amazing with jeans, especially skinny or boyfriend style jeans.

4. Barely There

Supermodels like Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, and Kendall Jenner have been all over this style for a while, but I am officially on board with the “lingerie” style camis. They’re comfortable and breezy, and are honestly an effortless way to look well-dressed. I do caution, though, the best way to style these while remaining professional is to make sure not too much actual lingerie is showing underneath. A little peek of lace is subtle and sexy, but you don’t want to show the whole bra.

5. Short Skirt / Long Jacket

I’ve always loved the look of long-sleeve tops with shorts or mini-skirts, and I love this cozy version with a pink suede skirt. I actually purchased a pink suede skirt last spring and haven’t had the right chance to wear it out yet, but this picture made me want to wear it ASAP. Love the balance of a chunky knit with a soft mini.

So that’s all I’ve got for now! I’m sure in another month or so I’ll be ready to share some more pieces I’m dreaming of. Now that we’re all in the fall spirit, who else is ready for Halloween?! *raises hand*

My Halloween Costume

I know, it’s November 1st and you’re probably totally over Halloween…but I wanted to share my costume with you all! I loved this costume so much, and I felt really proud of it because I actually got my act together this year to decide what I wanted to be and then pull it all together. And the best part is I got all of the pieces at the thrift store, and created my costume out of it! Halloween is just the best.

Spring Fashion Inspiration

Even though I’m escaping all of the wintery snow and cold this year, I’m looking forward to spring. The days will get longer, the flowers will start to bloom, and of course, a new season of fashion will be upon us. I’ve started making wishlists (it’s how I prioritize what I really want to buy each season) for this spring/summer already, and today I’m going to share them with all of you!

Here’s what I’m looking for this spring:

1. Suede skirts. I know, I’m a little late to the party, but I think these button-down suede skirts would work for all 4 seasons. You can dress them up or down, and they’d go with almost anything. Personally, I’m looking for a navy color; it’s a little different than the popular camel color, and I think it’d be more flattering for my skin tone. (Blue and Beige)

2. Bold prints. Nothing new here, you guys already know I love bold prints and colors (especially when a matching set is involved!). This Ann Taylor culotte/top combo is just perfect, something you could wear together or separately for lots of cheerful looks. (Top and Bottom)

4. Flared jeans. These have been “in” all year, but I think they’re here to stay. Wide leg and flare jeans are a fun way to mix it up, and while I’m loyal to my boyfriend jeans, I’m on the hunt for a good pair of flares. (Flares)

5. Flat booties. I have a great pair of low-heel ankle boots that I love, but I’ve been searching for a flat pair of booties for the longest time. I love the pairing of these tan booties with a shirtdress: so cute! (Booties)

So those are the big items on my spring wishlist. What about you? What spring trends are you searching for?

Fall Fashion Inspiration

Although it’s still hot and humid here in Pittsburgh (it’s been 90 degrees all weekend long!), fall is on its way with cooler temps and the best fashion of the year. I’m ready for my favorite things about fall–sipping hot coffee in the cool mornings, all things pumpkin-flavored, and going slightly out of my way to step on all the crunchy leaves on the sidewalk. And of course, fall is my favorite season of fashion. There’s just something inspiring about the fall.

Anyway, here’s some photos I’m looking at for inspiration as the fall sneaks up on us.

  2. I’m a sucker for prints–this matching set is perfect. (Image via Elle)
  3. The layers, the boyfriend jeans, the hat. It’s pulled together, but just unmatched enough to be cool. (Image via These Foreign Lands)

  5. As someone who walks nearly everywhere, the sneakers trend is still one of my favorites. Paired with a classic coat and varsity sweatshirt, they’re not just for hitting the gym anymore. (Image via StyleCaster)

What fall fashion ideas have caught your eye? Happy September!

A Mile in Her Shoes: Fall Picks

I knew this fall semester was going to be a tricky one in terms of fashion and shoes — I’m moving from Pittsburgh mid-December, so I’m trying to really limit my clothes and shoes because I can only take so much with me. Plus, I’m starting some professional clinical rotations 2 days a week, so I need shoes that are appropriate and comfortable. Not to mention, I have to walk back and forth to school, to the bus stop, etc. Lots of walking in Pittsburgh. So I needed some comfortable, practical flats for the fall.

Enter these recent purchases: a red Minnetonka moccasin, beige-and-white striped Keds, and these unique Naturalizers.

The Mocs

I’ve admired the Minnetonka brand for years, and I’ve always wanted a colorful pair. While slipper-like in comfort, the shoes have fairly good treads and are really well-made. Plus, the cherry red color is perfect for fall!

The “Preppy” Sneakers

These Keds have a cushion in them, so they’re super comfortable in addition to being adorable. I love mixing them with mini-skirts and boyfriend jeans for an unexpected but pulled-together look.

The Professional Flats

These Naturalizer’s are made of incredibly stretchy and soft fabric that always bounces back. I love the thick horizontal strap, which adds a little “ballerina” to them. And they have a thick sole, making them really comfy to stand in a while.

All 3 of these shoes are going to make a great (and practical) addition to my fall closet. Which shoes are you loving for fall?

Closet Crush: Summer Wardrobe

I’ve had major shopping withdrawals the last few weeks. All I want to do in my spare time is online shop (very dangerous habit). Somehow I’ve been able to hold off so far, but I’m excited to get shopping after my Finals are over this week. There are some really great summer trends this year that I can’t wait to get my hands on! Here are some of the trends I’ll be looking for this year (click the pictures for the links!):

1. Matching Sets — Taylor Swift might just be the master of matching sets (I think she’s on to something!). This trend has been going around for a couple of years now, and I love it so much. It’s playful, pretty, and unique. Bonus points for a matching set with shorts, rather than a skirt.

2. Crop Midi — My friends joke (lovingly) that I’m a grandma trapped in a 20-something’s body, so crop tops don’t exactly fit into that picture. But I think there’s a way to do a crop in a way that shows just the teensiest of skin (or no skin at all!!) that isn’t too cringe-worthy. I call them “crop midi’s” because they fall below the ribs and above the belly button — perfect length for a high-waisted skirt!

3. Feminine Tomboy — I’ve really developed my personal style this year, and I’ve ended up with a very feminine tomboy type of look that essentially consists of colorful blouses, boyfriend jeans, and my navy utility jacket. I’m in love with my boyfriend jeans, and I hope to invest in a couple more good pairs this summer since they’ve become a closet staple.

4. Birkenstocks — Okay, I’ve been known to laugh at this brand in the past, but they’ve come out with some really pretty styles this year (read: pretty colors that aren’t quite as “hippie” feeling). I’ve noticed a lot of my favorite bloggers wearing them this year, and I can’t help but want to take home a pair for myself. They look amazingly comfortable, which is really important for me (all of those years of ballet and pointe really do a number on your feet!).

A Mile in Her Shoes: Cream Moccasins

I really love fashion. There is something so satisfying about putting together different outfits, playing with my personal style, and trying new combinations. It just fills my heart up. Because fashion is sort of a big part of my life (and one of my interests, for sure!), I’m trying to incorporate it in this blog a little bit more. I’m still working out some kinks and brainstorming ways to post more fashion content to Imperfect Chevron, but I came up with a fun idea called “A Mile in Her Shoes,” which is going to be a mini-series in which I share some of my favorite shoes. It might be really fun, or it might be a total bust. But I’m going for it! My first pair of shoes that I’d like to share with you are my vintage moccasins.

I picked these up at my favorite flea market a couple of years back, and I love them so much. They have gotten a little dirty, which is the problem with cream colored shoes. But they’re still in good shape!

The moccasins have fringe on the front, wrap-around lacing on the sides, and hard soles with a slight heel. The hard bottoms make me feel ultra-fancy when I walk because they sound like high-heels! But it’s not great during exams when the whole room is silent…

After a couple times wearing them, the original lace (which is made of a pretty fragile leather cord) broke. I was able to buy some similar leather cord at the fabric/craft store near my house, and it’s held up really well!

Obviously, I wouldn’t walk miles in these shoes, but they’re pretty comfortable to walk to school in. They’re not really built for snow or heavy rain, but I would wear them if it was raining lightly.

My favorite thing about these moc’s is that the whole shoe is soft, which I love. My feet are weird and deformed (gross) from years of ballet, and I have a hard time wearing leather or stiff shoes. I’d love to get some more moccasins sometime soon, maybe some different colored ones, blue or black would be pretty.
