You guys, this day is very special and important. Today is our dog Ben’s birthday, and he’s 14 years old! Can you even believe it? I wanted to post some pictures and tell you all a little about this very special dog, in honor of his birthday today. And just so you know, we’re planning a great little shindig this weekend with our family for him (cake and presents included, because dogs are people too!). If there’s one thing Ben loves, it’s a good party.

My family adopted Ben when he was about 10 months old (so the shelter told us, and we think that was pretty accurate). At the shelter, we were walking up and down the aisles looking for the perfect new addition to our family, and there was this one dog who was sticking his paw out of the cage. My dad (and subsequently, all of us) fell hard for him, and we brought him home and he’s been a critical part of our family ever since. He had cancer several years ago, and our vet told us last year that he’s got active cancer now, so we’re not expecting a whole lot more time with him, but we’re ever so grateful for the time we have. He’s so special to us!

Ben loves Christmas, you actually have to watch him like a hawk with any presents under the tree because he starts ripping into them. He loves opening presents.

He loves snow: playing in it, laying in it, catching snowballs…

he’s really good at the doggy-emoji face…

like, really good at it.

He’s also great at taking naps.

His favorite toys are stuffed animals and tennis balls.

He’s also an excellent beggar (and now that he’s old we pretty much give him MOST of what he wants, unless it’ll make him sick).

Happy Birthday, Ben! We love you so much.

Life Update: Dog Days of Summer

We’ve finally gotten to that “Dog Days of Summer” time of year, although here in CO it’s been really cool (like pants weather) this week. I’m in full speed job-searching mode around here, so life’s been a little hectic, but also exciting.

Here’s a few photos from what’s been going on around here lately:

  1. I passed the NBCOT (a really big scary national board exam for occupational therapy), and i had a special celebration with my family and this amazing bundt cake.Life Update via Imperfect Chevron
  2. doggie car rides are always the best. this dude is turning 14 next week and we’re all amazed and grateful that he’s lived this long and happy life. he had cancer a few years back, and the vet told us this year that he’s got active cancer now, so we’re not expecting a lot more time with him but we’re grateful for every day that he’s able to spend with us (still enjoying life).Life Update via Imperfect Chevron
  3. I bought this little stool for $3 at a thrift store; it had black legs and the most hideous carpety fabric. I painted the legs white and recovered the cushion in this adorable citron polka dot fabric. it’s currently functioning at my sewing table/vanity table.Life Update via Imperfect Chevron
  4. in one of my free hours last week i made this little polka dot card set. i used acrylic paint, heavy art paper (which I cut into the perfect sizes), and this calligraphy cheat.Life Update via Imperfect Chevron

Hope your week is going great!

Holiday Lights DIY

I love decorating for the holidays. The last few years, my family has put out decorations before I get home from school (but they always wait for me to decorate our tree!). This year, my mom bought a little foam craft kit from Michael’s for me to make during my break with the intent of hanging them from the string of lights on our front porch. They look so cute, you guys, when you see them you’ll want to make a string of lights for yourself! This craft is great for kids AND adults. You could even host a little craft party!

For this string, we used a few different craft kits — Santa’s, penguins, snowmen, and owls (my favorite!).

After making the little foam creatures, I poked a piece of telephone wire through them. You could use any type of wire or string, and you could definitely use a hole punch to make it easier.

With the little owls hanging on their wires, I was ready to hang them. I just slipped the wire through one of the cords on the string of lights, and then twisted the wire around itself. And that was all!

This craft is so fun, and you could use the foam pieces for a lot of things! I also think they would make an adorable garland above the mantle or hung above a window.

Have you made any cute holiday decor? I’d love to see it on Twitter, tweet me @kellytraut with #DIYholiday

Birthday Week

happy birthday!

I said goodbye to 22 and hello to 23 on my birthday last Wednesday (you guys, where does the time go?), and thanks to my family and friends, I had a great day celebrating! I’m a big supporter of the idea of “birthday week” now that I’m getting further into my 20’s, because somehow after you turn 21 birthdays don’t feel like that much of a big deal anymore. “Birthday week” lasts the whole week that your birthday falls into, and basically you just treat yourself to little things all week long (and continually remind your family that *hint, hint* it is your special week, ha!).

Here are some of my photos from “birthday week.” I’m absolutely kicking myself for not taking any pictures of my cake, which was from Costco and had these pretty musical notes on it, because it was really the only thing I wanted for my birthday. Which tells you where my priorities are in life (;

birthday donuts

It wouldn’t be birthday week without some birthday doughnuts! (It totally still would, but I really really love doughnuts.) I got them on sale after the 4th of July weekend was over — leftover doughnuts for the win!

happy birthday

I hung this adorable banner in our dining room the whole week. A couple of my friends gave it to me a couple of years ago as a surprise when we coached swim team together, and I’ve held on to it to bring out for birthday celebrations! It sounds kind of silly, but it made me feel special all week.

If you ever get a Starbucks giftcard, register it through their app, and then keep a little money on the card until your birthday so you can get a free birthday drink! I love that Starbucks does that, it’s really a huge treat for me since I almost never go out for coffee. I tried their cold brew coffee (with a touch of soy milk and no sweetener) and it was really good, I’d recommend it!

I think my cat has finally accepted me as her own again (it only took her 3 weeks *eye roll*). She hung out with me a lot during birthday week, and I snapped this picture of her in a new box she got this week.

spa day at home

On my birthday, I pulled out my old foot bath/home spa set and gave myself a “stay-at-home spa day.” It was so relaxing and felt like a really special treat to myself. I’m going to have to use that thing a few more times this summer!

Anyway, I had a great “birthday week.” Now that the celebrations are over, I’m starting to embrace being 23 and getting excited for what this year will bring. There are so many things to look forwards to, and I think it’s going to be a great year.
