Life Lately: October Vibes

Is it just me or was it just August, like, last week? Somehow we’re already almost through all of October, and it hasn’t quite felt like fall to me yet. Maybe it’s because I’m used to the Colorado fall, and here in California it’s still been pretty warm. Seriously, this week is in the high 80s and low 90s! There’s barely any color changes in the leaves, too, which is kind of weird. But, one way or another, it’s almost November. Wanted to share a few quick photos with a brief update, since it’s been such a busy fall.

A couple of weekends ago, I hiked Mission Peak (a classic Fremont hike) with a friend. It was 85 degrees in the middle of the afternoon and we didn’t bring enough water, and I honestly thought I wasn’t going to make it. My friend pushed me to the top, and even though I probably won’t do that hike again anytime soon, I’m glad we made it. This picture is the view from the top. (Also pretty amazed my friend put up with my complaining, thanks for dealing with me at my worst.)

After trying sushi for the first time this month (and loving it, surprisingly!), I picked up this adorable printed blouse as an homage to my new love for it. All them sushi vibes!

Made homemade hot-pot last weekend, and it was SO good. Still tampering with the broth recipe, but it’ll get there. If you haven’t had hot-pot before, it’s a broth that you cook meat and vegetables in at your table (kind of like Asian fondue, I guess?).

My poor kitty (who lives in Colorado with my parents) had to have a cyst removed above her eye this week, and she looked so scary after! Poor little girl. I guess the timing is all right, with Halloween right around the corner. She can go as a zombie cat, maybe?

Picked up this little Cabin candle and have really enjoyed burning it so far. It’s subtle but freshens up the room with a musky, earthy scent.

And a snapchat from the Pumpkin patch, because what would Halloween be without pumpkins? Side note, I carved mine WAY too early and it’s already mushy. So. Womp womp. But it was still fun, definitely one of my favorite fall traditions. My family always carved pumpkins every year, and I love continuing to do so to celebrate the season.

Anyway, hope things are going well for all of you! Happy Halloween (:

My Halloween Costume

I know, it’s November 1st and you’re probably totally over Halloween…but I wanted to share my costume with you all! I loved this costume so much, and I felt really proud of it because I actually got my act together this year to decide what I wanted to be and then pull it all together. And the best part is I got all of the pieces at the thrift store, and created my costume out of it! Halloween is just the best.

I have always wanted to be a skunk for Halloween. Dreams really do come true!

Halloween Weekend

Happy Halloween, everyone! I am so excited to dress up tonight and hand out candy to all the sweet little kiddos in my neighborhood tonight. This Halloween weekend was very quiet for me–since I don’t have many local friends I didn’t have any parties or reasons to dress up–but I’m still thrilled to put on my costume tonight because I LOVE HALLOWEEN. And I’m being a skunk, so…!

This Colorado weather can just continue straight through the winter, if it likes. I mean, I do like skiing and watching the snow fall while I sip (read: chug) coffee. But these sunny 70 degree days give me major heart-eyed emoji. My quiet Halloween weekend involved taking a nice hike in Centennial Cone park, carving pumpkins, a night at the theatre, and visiting the Rocky Mountain arsenal for a little wildlife drive.

I carved my little Owl-oween pumpkin Friday night and I am seriously proud of it.

The Mayhem Gulch trail was seriously beautiful. I was in a grouchy, don’t-poke-the-bear mood on Saturday (I’ve been going through some difficulties with job-hunting and anxiety lately) but this helped perk me up. Thanks, nature, for throwing me a bone when I needed it most!

My mom and I went to the student dance concert at my old stomping grounds (The Arvada Center) on Saturday night and we were blown away by those amazing dancers. The company is so truly talented, and watching them perform made my heart so full! As soon as the lights went down I had this unexpected emotional moment of remembering how much I loved being on that same stage. All the feels! Without sounding too cheesy or ranting for too long, I’m just so thankful to have this little dance community. I’m inspired by all of these talented, creative, passionate people surrounding me, and I know that dance will always be my “home.” And here’s a snapchat before the show, because, you know, proof that I clean up ok (:

The Rocky Mountain arsenal is a pretty cool place. The wildlife drive is really pretty, and there are lots of little trails you can stop and walk a little ways (which is SO nice in the winter). You never know what you’ll see out there. But no guarantees, because the animals are wild so they roam wherever they feel like. It’s funny because honestly so much of Colorado is plains, and looks like this, but I always think people don’t see the beauty in it. And I guess it’s easy to look past the plains to the mountains, because, duh, the mountains here are incredible! But the plains are special and beautiful in their own way, too.

Not the best picture but that city skyline against those mountains!

In the visitor’s center, I went into the little discovery room (totally meant for elementary school kids) and dissected an owl pellet because yup, I’m that person. I’m obsessed with owls, and it’s really neat to find all the teeny little rodent bones intact inside the pellet. I know, it’s a little weird. But in a cool way, right? The bison herd was crossing the road just before we drove up, and it was really special to see them up close. They’re such beautiful animals, and I think you can really appreciate how big they are when you see them so close!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is my favorite holiday, and I’ve been keeping it pretty low key the last couple years (grad school really puts a damper on having money and time to put together a costume, much less go out). I dressed up with some of my classmates on Friday, and a couple of my friends and I enjoyed happy hour at a piano bar–so fun! I dressed up as Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation, complete with a “Bowling Comment” binder. I hope your holiday is wonderful!

My class is amazing. Love them so!
