It hasn’t really felt much like Christmas to me yet this year. I’m not sure if it’s because I moved to California and there’s no snow, or if it’s because I’ve been very busy at work, or if it’s because I won’t be home for Christmas this year…but I haven’t been feeling very festive this month.
Anyway, it’s my first Christmas alone, and it definitely feels weird. But things are going good here so far, and I’m grateful for it. I know I’ve made the right decision in moving across the country by myself to start a brand new job in a brand new city. It feels really right (and also kind of like I’m getting dragged behind the boat most of the time, but I digress). Like I’m where I’m meant to be. Good vibes only!
I hope that your Christmas is merry and bright, no matter where you are and no matter who you’re with (or not with). Fill your day with love and joy, find happiness in the little things, and be present in the moment. Wishing all of you (and your families!) a very Merry Christmas.
Once December hits, I’m ready to get festive for the season. I pull out all the fuzzy blankets (which I secretly keep out all year long, #AlwaysCold am I right?), brew up a mug of hot tea, and make a cozy and festive holiday playlist. This year, I’ll be spending my first Christmas totally alone, away from home. And while I’m pretty ok with it so far, I know I’ll really want a solid playlist to keep me feeling the holiday spirit, even when I start to get all the homesick feels.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas music, but the classic stuff gets kind of old after a little while. So I made a little Indie Christmas playlist with some fun and different tunes, and I’m sharing it with you all today in case you want something festive to listen to this season!

Since 3/4 of my family are leaving for a big road trip on Christmas, my family decided to decorate the house in “minimalistic” fashion this year. Here are some peeks at some of the decorations up in our house this December:
My great-uncle carved this wooden Santa for my mom a few years back.
Our family + pets’ stockings
A ceramic musical Frosty
Little animal figurines from New Mexico on the mantle.
Even the house plant has lights!
I love decorating for the holidays. The last few years, my family has put out decorations before I get home from school (but they always wait for me to decorate our tree!). This year, my mom bought a little foam craft kit from Michael’s for me to make during my break with the intent of hanging them from the string of lights on our front porch. They look so cute, you guys, when you see them you’ll want to make a string of lights for yourself! This craft is great for kids AND adults. You could even host a little craft party!
For this string, we used a few different craft kits — Santa’s, penguins, snowmen, and owls (my favorite!).
After making the little foam creatures, I poked a piece of telephone wire through them. You could use any type of wire or string, and you could definitely use a hole punch to make it easier.
With the little owls hanging on their wires, I was ready to hang them. I just slipped the wire through one of the cords on the string of lights, and then twisted the wire around itself. And that was all!
This craft is so fun, and you could use the foam pieces for a lot of things! I also think they would make an adorable garland above the mantle or hung above a window.
Have you made any cute holiday decor? I’d love to see it on Twitter, tweet me @kellytraut with #DIYholiday
December has been a month filled with late nights and tears (I was taking my finals last week), leaving Pittsburgh, and prepping for my big road trip to move to Florida for my first clinical rotation. Oh, and the holidays!
While it’s been busy, I’ve enjoyed spending time with my family and pets this week. It’s always so good to be home. Here are some photos from life lately:
So proud of my classmates for finishing our finals! Now we’re all headed off to our clinical rotations. MOT Class of 2016!
A snapshot of my last walk in Schenley Park.
Not the best picture, but flying home was the prettiest.
Elouise and Ben.
Our annual Christmas cookies…we use zoo animal cutters.
Hope your holiday season is filled with love and joy!
I hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July today! Celebrate with lots of friends, good food, and (hopefully) sunshine.
Have a safe and wonderful weekend,
I want to wish everyone happy holidays (I know it’s a little late)! I hope they’re filled with love and joy.
I’ve been enjoying my time off from school back home in Colorado, spending every second with my family and pets. It’s been so nice, and I’ll be sad to leave next week! But I am excited to get back to school and see my friends, and get back into that routine again. I’m so thankful to have had this long break to spend with my family, I’ll be much more motivated to kick butt next semester.
I’ll post again soon, I promise! For now, here are a couple of pictures of my fur-babies. They kind of love the holidays.
Ben guarding our Christmas tree.
Elouise got a new box! Cats are such sweet weirdos, they do love their boxes.
