Life Update: Happy New Year

You guys! It’s been so long. I don’t have any good excuse, only that it’s been a busy whirlwind couple of months. I wanted to share a quick update on my life, and also to wish you all a Happy New Year! Can you believe 2018 is here? I have lots of hopes and goals for this year, and I’m really looking forward to get back into blogging in the new year.

I’ve been getting back into hiking the past couple of months, and it feels so good. A few weeks back, I was hiking with a friend in the redwoods and it was right in the middle of the ladybug migration season. How cool is that? There were literally thousands in clumps all over the trail.

I flew back to Colorado for 3 days over Christmas to see my family and it was really nice. It was a short trip but it was great to spend some quality time with them. Now that I live in California, I don’t get to see my family that often and it’s just nice to be in the same room. My cat was…ignoring me pretty much the whole weekend. But that’s how cats are, isn’t it? My parents were babysitting a dog, and he was the sweetest dog ever — a total snuggle baby.

This December, I tried to do as many holiday-themed activities as possible. Some of my friends got together for a gingerbread house competition, and it was so much fun. We couldn’t pick a winner, because they all turned out so good. Everybody got really into the details and we all got so competitive, it was such a fun thing to do with friends!

I’ve been doing some little art projects lately, and one of my friends thought of this brilliant idea to hang paper airplanes from the ceiling over the bed. I love it so much, it’s one of the most fun room decorations I’ve ever had. It’s very comforting to wake up and see colorful planes having over you.

I also took a stab at making my first Christmas ornament this year: a pineapple out of felt. I made it for a friend, and it took me probably 5 hours to do it, but I love the way it turned out! I might write a tutorial for the pineapple, if you guys are interested. I know it’s past Christmas, but I think this could be cute at parties or baby showers or summer bbq’s, too. (:

I hope you all had a great holiday season, and Happy New Year! Anybody have a resolution this year? I’d love to hear what your goals are for the year.

Life Lately: October Vibes

Is it just me or was it just August, like, last week? Somehow we’re already almost through all of October, and it hasn’t quite felt like fall to me yet. Maybe it’s because I’m used to the Colorado fall, and here in California it’s still been pretty warm. Seriously, this week is in the high 80s and low 90s! There’s barely any color changes in the leaves, too, which is kind of weird. But, one way or another, it’s almost November. Wanted to share a few quick photos with a brief update, since it’s been such a busy fall.

A couple of weekends ago, I hiked Mission Peak (a classic Fremont hike) with a friend. It was 85 degrees in the middle of the afternoon and we didn’t bring enough water, and I honestly thought I wasn’t going to make it. My friend pushed me to the top, and even though I probably won’t do that hike again anytime soon, I’m glad we made it. This picture is the view from the top. (Also pretty amazed my friend put up with my complaining, thanks for dealing with me at my worst.)

After trying sushi for the first time this month (and loving it, surprisingly!), I picked up this adorable printed blouse as an homage to my new love for it. All them sushi vibes!

Made homemade hot-pot last weekend, and it was SO good. Still tampering with the broth recipe, but it’ll get there. If you haven’t had hot-pot before, it’s a broth that you cook meat and vegetables in at your table (kind of like Asian fondue, I guess?).

My poor kitty (who lives in Colorado with my parents) had to have a cyst removed above her eye this week, and she looked so scary after! Poor little girl. I guess the timing is all right, with Halloween right around the corner. She can go as a zombie cat, maybe?

Picked up this little Cabin candle and have really enjoyed burning it so far. It’s subtle but freshens up the room with a musky, earthy scent.

And a snapchat from the Pumpkin patch, because what would Halloween be without pumpkins? Side note, I carved mine WAY too early and it’s already mushy. So. Womp womp. But it was still fun, definitely one of my favorite fall traditions. My family always carved pumpkins every year, and I love continuing to do so to celebrate the season.

Anyway, hope things are going well for all of you! Happy Halloween (:

Life Lately (and an apology)

Hey, there, and happy April! First things first, I want to honestly apologize for my lack of presence here on the blog the last couple of months. I’ve been trying to survive at work, and in the last couple of weeks I’ve realized I haven’t been taking good care of myself. So I may not be posting too much in the next couple of months, while I try to get myself back on track! I think, sometimes you just have to take some time off and get a breath of fresh air.

Anyway, this weekend I headed over to a local park for a short hike, and I snapped a couple photos. The pictures just don’t do this view justice, I swear it is even prettier in person. California sure is nice!

Just look at these wildflowers, I mean!!!

I always feel like getting out in the fresh air recharges me, it really refreshes my soul. It sounds weird but I always feel so much better when I get out.

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Life Update: Spring Fever

I’ve had a looooott of people ask me how I’m liking California so far. And to be honest, I’m really liking it! But I’ve had some bouts of grouchiness with all the rain we’ve been having here…I mean, I know it’s a good thing. But also, I’m a sun baby. I love my sunshine, and just getting outdoors, and when I can’t do that I start to get a little antsy. Anyway, overall I’d have to say that California has been treating me well so far! I’m dreaming of Spring, and am already more than ready to break out my shorts and start shopping for swimsuits for the Summer…yeah, I get a little excited about warm weather.

Here are some snapshots from life lately:

I just bought this cute little lens for your iPhone, it slips right over the camera slot. I’ve been playing with it a bit, here are a couple of the wide angle shots:

Been feeling a bit under the weather the last couple weeks, so I’ve been upping my Vitamin C intake, which looks like this for me (I’m not big on taking medicine):

Lately I’ve had the creative itch…I’ve been doing a lot of painting and sewing! I made some adorable pillowcases with the cutest prints. Popsicles!?! I mean!!?

So that’s a little bit of what I’ve been up to! Hope you have a wonderful week. Holy cow, we’re welcoming March this week! :0

My Life in California

Happy weekend, guys! I’m finally feeling like myself again after a doozy of a cold last week, I hope none of you get it. Tis the season, right? I’m sitting here, sipping on my first cup of coffee in a week (I KNOW HOW THE HECK AM I STILL ALIVE?) and I realized I haven’t given any blog updates on how things have been going since the big move. So while this happy caffeine buzz lasts, I want to share a little about what I’ve been up to since moving to California about a month ago!

The San Francisco Bay Area sure is beautiful. I’m in love with the green hills all around, the palm trees that line some of the streets, and the views of the bay. I live in the East Bay, and so far I love it. To be fair, I do miss home (Colorado will always be my “home”)…but it’s helped that the winter here is so mild. People have been complaining about the 40s and 50s here, and I’m just happy I don’t need a winter jacket.

My Life in California // Imperfect Chevron

I bought this pretty little plant baby, and I love her so!

I’ve been settling in to my new job, and it’s very fulfilling and challenging. My coworkers rock, I’m slowly building up to a full caseload, and I’m learning so SO so much. It’s hard, pretty much all the time I feel like I’m flailing, but I know I’m where I’m supposed to be right now. It’s so good, to finally be working and actually loving what I’m doing, and I’m really grateful for it.

My Life in California // Imperfect Chevron

One of my coworkers brought back these amazing Harry Potter enamel pins from Universal Studios. See? I fit in so well with these people!

I’m back to ballet again, I found a great studio in the Bay Area that offers tons of adult classes. It’s pretty intense–a lot of local professional dancers take the class, and everyone is amazing, but it’s been so cool to be in class with such talented artistic people. I love watching them in class and trying to imitate their artistry (and failing miserably, of course). Ballet just fills my soul with joy!

My daily mantra…and my coffee vessel of choice

Weekends have mostly been spent relaxing, studying, and exploring the area slowly. I don’t really have friends here yet (other than my coworkers), so it’s been a little weird and lonely at times…but I know I’ll meet great people eventually! I think it just takes time to really integrate yourself into a new community and get out there and actually meet people. It’s something that can be sort of challenging for me, because I’m definitely an introverted person. It takes me a little while to warm up to new people and really be myself. So I’m trying to really push myself in that area. Work in progress, right?

I’m still trying to find a good balance of how I spend my time…right now I’m learning so much and having to study in a lot of my free time, so I haven’t had as much time to participate in my hobbies as I’d like. I’m trying to learn French so I can go to Paris with my family later this year, and I’m hoping to carve out some dedicated weekly time to work on that. I’m also not getting as many creative outlets as I’d like right now–there are times that I really get the itch to create, and right now I just don’t have a ton of time to fulfill the need. Again, work in progress.

Just a selfie to demonstrate that I’m happy here. #Shameless

Anyway, I don’t want to go on and on and bore you to bits. I just wanted to share a little of what my life has been like since I uprooted myself. As hard as it’s been to be alone in a new city, starting a new job…I really feel like I’m meant to be here right now. It feels right. I’m happy here right now! Thanks for letting me gush on for a while there. I’m trying not to be too doofy, but California is treating me pretty well so far.

Halloween Weekend

Happy Halloween, everyone! I am so excited to dress up tonight and hand out candy to all the sweet little kiddos in my neighborhood tonight. This Halloween weekend was very quiet for me–since I don’t have many local friends I didn’t have any parties or reasons to dress up–but I’m still thrilled to put on my costume tonight because I LOVE HALLOWEEN. And I’m being a skunk, so…!

This Colorado weather can just continue straight through the winter, if it likes. I mean, I do like skiing and watching the snow fall while I sip (read: chug) coffee. But these sunny 70 degree days give me major heart-eyed emoji. My quiet Halloween weekend involved taking a nice hike in Centennial Cone park, carving pumpkins, a night at the theatre, and visiting the Rocky Mountain arsenal for a little wildlife drive.

I carved my little Owl-oween pumpkin Friday night and I am seriously proud of it.

The Mayhem Gulch trail was seriously beautiful. I was in a grouchy, don’t-poke-the-bear mood on Saturday (I’ve been going through some difficulties with job-hunting and anxiety lately) but this helped perk me up. Thanks, nature, for throwing me a bone when I needed it most!

My mom and I went to the student dance concert at my old stomping grounds (The Arvada Center) on Saturday night and we were blown away by those amazing dancers. The company is so truly talented, and watching them perform made my heart so full! As soon as the lights went down I had this unexpected emotional moment of remembering how much I loved being on that same stage. All the feels! Without sounding too cheesy or ranting for too long, I’m just so thankful to have this little dance community. I’m inspired by all of these talented, creative, passionate people surrounding me, and I know that dance will always be my “home.” And here’s a snapchat before the show, because, you know, proof that I clean up ok (:

The Rocky Mountain arsenal is a pretty cool place. The wildlife drive is really pretty, and there are lots of little trails you can stop and walk a little ways (which is SO nice in the winter). You never know what you’ll see out there. But no guarantees, because the animals are wild so they roam wherever they feel like. It’s funny because honestly so much of Colorado is plains, and looks like this, but I always think people don’t see the beauty in it. And I guess it’s easy to look past the plains to the mountains, because, duh, the mountains here are incredible! But the plains are special and beautiful in their own way, too.

Not the best picture but that city skyline against those mountains!

In the visitor’s center, I went into the little discovery room (totally meant for elementary school kids) and dissected an owl pellet because yup, I’m that person. I’m obsessed with owls, and it’s really neat to find all the teeny little rodent bones intact inside the pellet. I know, it’s a little weird. But in a cool way, right? The bison herd was crossing the road just before we drove up, and it was really special to see them up close. They’re such beautiful animals, and I think you can really appreciate how big they are when you see them so close!
